Madekwe was born into an ethnically mixed family. Her father and mother have both been English. Her family was raised in an estate in South London council estate and at the age of 14, attended The Brit School. She studied acting in The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London. At school, she was a part-time actor in several stage productions, such as King Henry V's princess Katherine or Wuthering Heights.
Madekwe began her acting career with a film titled Storm Damage. In the following years, she appeared in Teachers, Doctors Casualty and Drop Dead Gorgeous. The show was announced in May 2013 that she was set to leave the series after making an appearance in the first season of the third. From 2014 to the year 2016, she appeared on Salem in the role of Tituba. Madekwe, along with her boyfriend of many years, Iddo Goldenberg, were wedding in June of 2012. The two have collaborated in the show Secret Diary of a Call Girl in the past, and Goldberg is also a part of the cast on the TV show Salem.

Ashley Leggat, an actress that was nominated two times for the Gemini Award, is a member of the large Hamilton family. Ashley Leggat was a part of Roy and Patty as well her older siblings: Brett, Todd and Bram and Rob. Ashley's brothers were athletic and played baseball during summers and hockey during winters.
